Stephen Malkmus, 'Stephen Malkmus' (2001)

El otro día una leoparda me envió un paquete desde el otro lado del océano con discos y dvd's varios, y entre ellos, el típico Cd recopilatorio que todos hemos hecho una y 1000 veces para amigos, ligues y demás (ay, aquellos cassetes que me curraba en mi 4 pistas casero, y esas portadas...). En ese CD, incluía una de mis canciones favoritas de un artista que ella decía desconocer pero que le gustaba mucho: 'Jenny & The Ess-Dog', de Stephen Malkmus. Hacía tiempo que no me lo ponía, y al escuchar la canción recuperé ese disco, cosa siempre recomendable para adquirir un estado de armonía y buenrollismo universal.

He dicho una y 1000 veces cuánto amo a Pavement, y decir eso es decir que amo a Stephen Malkmus. Por eso, su separación fue una pésima noticia; y por eso saber hace casi una década que Malkmus iniciaba carrera en solitario fue una buena noticia; y por eso escuchar este debut fue una enorme alegría; y por eso os lo cuento y lo quiero compartir; y por eso...

Y es que este debut homónimo fue casi como un nuevo disco de Pavement. Quizás más simple, más directo y menos psicodélico (o no), pero manteniendo muchas de las señas de identidad de la banda de Stockton: pop indirecto, algo caótico y desordenado, y la inconfundible voz de Malkmus entrando en la habitación como los rayos de sol que alegran las mañanas de primavera. Y surrealistas historias propias de una cabeza singular, irónica y muy lúcida. Pues nada, a ver si todo eso se contagia...

The Kills, 'Black Balloon' EP (2009)

A los leopardos nos encantan los dúos chico-chica con guitarras de por medio + A los leopardos nos encanta el sexo + A los leopardos nos encanta la mugre + A los leopardos nos encanta lo visceral = No hace falta decir qué pensamos de The Kills...

Este EP se pone a la venta el lunes. Incluye un nuevo single del notable 'Midnight Boom' del año pasado, 'Black Balloon', que ya tiene videoclip de vampiros (y con prendas leopardas) incluído. Además, el disco se completa con 3 canciones de una sesiones en vivo para Itunes: 'Sour Cherry' (también de 'Midnight Boom'), y las versiones acústicas de 'Kissy Kissy' (del debut 'Keep On Your Mean Side'), y un reseñable cover del 'Crazy' que popularizó Patsy Cline. Casi nada...

Y parece ser que ahora que ya no están juntos, el tío se folla (o se follaba; tampoco estoy demasiado al caso) a Kate Moss. ¿Qué pensará Pete Doherty?

Fire On Fire 'The Orchard' (2008)

Con los problemas técnicos solucionados, me reincorporo a la guarida tras el letargo invernal.

¡Y empiezo fuerte! Uno de los discos que me tiene sorbida la sesera los últimos meses... Os dejo con la crítica que hice hace tiempo para el ruta y nunca se llegó a publicar.

Michael Gira es uno de esos maravillosos y poliédricos personajes que transitan por la inagotable escena del nuevo folk, sin los cuales no sería posible entender este fenómeno que se está cociendo en los últimos tiempos. Si hablamos de él podríamos hacerlo acerca de su banda actual, Angels of Light y de lo monumental que es ese We Are Him que no ha parado de sonar en la guarida del que os escribe, o de lo importantes que fueron los extintos Swans que tan magistralmente dirigió en los 80’s y principios de los 90’s; pero lo que realmente nos interesa abordar en esta ocasión es su faceta de descubridor de nuevos valores gracias a su valiosísimo trabajo al frente de Young God Records.

Descubridor entre otros de Devendra Banhart o Akron/Family, parece ser que sus tentáculos no descansan y no deja de sorprendernos con nuevos combos que saca de su mágica chistera y que vienen acompañados de trabajos de un nivel sideral.

Y es que este The Orchard es un viaje al meollo, a la esencia, a una época en que los músicos se reunían alrededor de una hoguera tras un duro día de trabajo y le cantaban al amor, la desdicha o a esos personajes malditos que tanto aterraban y atraían gracias a sus fechorías. Así, Colleen Kinsella (voces, harmonium, guitarra, acordeón, banjo), Caleb Mulkerin (voces, guitarra, banjo, dobro), Tom Kovacevic (voces, oud, nay, tamboritza, jembe, tamborín), Micah Blue Smaldone (voces, contrabajo, banjo) y Chriss Sutherland (voces, guitarra, doumbek) nos asombran con unas composiciones que deben hacer sentir hasta al más escéptico que la música está tan viva como lo estuvo en un pasado a veces demasiado mitificado.

Entrevista: Alex & The Horribles (versión española)

SI SIGUES ESTE BLOG, SABRÁS PERFECTAMENTE QUE SOMOS FANS DE ESTA JOVEN BANDA DE RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY. ELLOS CAPTURAN LA ESENCIA DE LAS MEJORES BANDAS DEL INDIE NORTEAMERICANO DE LOS 90 (PAVEMENT, PIXIES, DINOSAUR JR...), CON GRANDES CANCIONES BAJO EL VIEJO ESPÍRITU DEL 'HÁZTELO TÚ MISMO' ADAPTADO A LA ERA DE INTERNET. SU SEGUNDO DISCO BIEN VALÍA UNA SEGUNDA ENTREVISTA LEOPARDA CON ESTOS TIPOS...

-Primero de todo, explicar a los leopardos qué habéis estado haciendo desde la última vez que hablamos con vosotros, y los detalles de la grabación de 'Sleepwalking In The Future' (musicales, personales, si os habéis metido en la cama con muchas chicas, si habéis robado muchas cervezas en el súper... lo que sea!!). Me gusta la variedad de canciones que hay en este álbum (rápidas, furiosas, pop, melódicas...)

Alex: Ey, os habla Alex Goldstein, vocalista, frontman, o lo que sea. Ahora mismo no estoy seguro si este album tenía que salir. Las clases y otras obligaciones pueden poner mucha presión en una banda. Durante el verano, no pudimos tocar casi la mitad del tiempo por el trabajo, vacaciones... llegó el año escolar, hicimos grandes esfuerzos para tocar, reuniéndonos cada viernes, escribiendo nuevas canciones, rehaciendo otras antiguas, y tocando conciertos en la sala Death By Audio de Brooklyn y en el Mercury Lounge de Manhattan. Pero como se suele decir, todas las cosas buenas se acaban, y las clases nos robaron la mayor parte de nuestro tiempo. Durante 2 o 3 meses no pudimos ensayar, y fue en ese periodo cuando escribí la mayor parte de las letras del disco. Si el álbum rezuma optimismo a pesar de perder las cosas que quieres, supongo que es por todo eso. En diciembre, nuestros planes de grabar quedaron interrumpidos cuando Derek (guitarra solista, mezclador, el que pone la casa donde grabamos) decidió que no quería seguir tocando. Después de discutirlo con él, decidimos que teníamos que grabar esas canciones por lo mucho que nos gustaban. Por eso el disco tiene algo de destartalado. 'Make Out Like Japanese School Girls' estaba prevista como single, como 'Dig Up My Soul'. En algunas de las canciones no tocamos los 5. Ahora estamos buscando el camino por el que seguir, pero este disco no estaba pensado que saliera.

Thom: Saludos, Leopardos!!. Desde la última vez que hablamos han habido algunos traumas y algunos grandes momentos. Yo sigo en el instituto y me va bien. He estado escribiendo unas cuantas canciones con las que todavía no sé qué hacer. ¿Quizás salgan en el próximo disco de los Horribles? Estoy encantado de que os gustaran las canciones!

-¿Es cierto que grabásteis el disco en un ático? ¿Dónde? ¿Por qué? ¿Y cómo fue la fiesta de presentación, en un viernes tras la grabación? 

Alex: Sí, Derek nos grabó en su ático, donde solemos tocar, más que nada por razones económicas. Nos ofrecieron un buen presupuesto para hacerlo en un estudio de grabación local, pero debido a todo este drama que estábamos pasando... decidimos hacerlo por nuestra cuenta. Cuando estábamos grabando 'Mouth Jazz' y 'O Jin!' sin 2 de los 5 miembros de la banda, estábamos bastante desesperados porqué pensábamos que la banda se iba al traste. Hicimos una fiesta de presentación un viernes sin Ramy, conduciendo por ahí el coche de un amigo.

Thom:  Sí, lo grabamos en el ático de Derek, que es nuestra base de operaciones y donde ensayamos. Hemos grabado los dos discos allí. Personalmente, que ría grabar este disco en un estudio, pero creo que el disco suena muy bien (hay algunos cambios que yo habría hecho, pero aún así me gusta). Usamos amplificadores esta vez, y eso ha hecho que el bajo tuviera mucha presencia. 

-Leí en vuestro blog que una de mis canciones favoritas del disco, 'Coming Down', está basada en un libro tibetano q ue cuestiona los peligros del hedonismo. ¿Creéis que el hedonismo es peligroso? ¿tendremos que cambiar nuestra manera de vivir? (Quizás ya sea demasiado viejo y acostumbrado al hedonismo como para tener que cambiar ahora...)

Alex: Definitivamente, el hedonismo es una práctica peligrosa, y no recomendaría centrar tu vida en eso. Es muy bueno para tu alma divertirte y tomarte la vida con ligereza, pero vivir sin cuidado y sólo por placer es algo que sólo te beneficiará a tí. Vive con ligereza, pero considera a los demás.

Thom: Me sorprendió mucho cuando empecé a leer 'The Tibetian Book Of Living And Dying' ('El Libro Tibetano de Vivir Y Morir'). Me lo recomendó Alex, y le cogí una vieja copia a mi padre. Cada ágina de ese libro te abre la mente, y lo recomiendo a todo el mundo. Creo que es terrible que la sociedad haya llegado a un punto en que sólo buscamos el placer. No creo que todo el placer sea destructivo, pero realmente deberíamos tener cuidado.

-El disco está lleno de referencias a bandas jodidamente buenas (Pulp, Blur, The Kinks, Nirvana, Thin Lizzy, Sonic Youth, Radiohead, And You Will Know Us..., Joy Division...) y a mucha poesía. ¿Son esas vuestras mayores influencias, no sólo en la música sino en la vida en general?

Alex: Bueno, primero de todo gracias, porqué es un honor que nos pongas en la misma frase que todas esas bandas. Nuestras influencias varían en cada canción, o incluso dentro de una misma canción, y eso se ve en este álbum. 'Mary X' puede sonar a una combinación de Cap'n Jazz, Dinosaur Jr, y The Band, y "O Jin" recuerda a una fusión de la primeras grabaciones de Creation Records como The Boo Radleys o Teenage Fanclub con pasajes de Skynyrd. Como compositor, estoy influenciado por... no sé... todo! Ja, ja! Mis letras hacen referencias a películas, escritores, músicos, poetas, etc. que han marcado mi vida. Aún así, asociadme sólo con Stephen Malkmus (ndr. cantante de Pavement), por favor.

Thom: Sí, todas esas bandas que mencionas han sido una gran influencia en el disco. La semana antes de grabar el álbum me puse a escuchar The Fall, y esto seguro que la gente podrá oir la influencia de Mark E. Smith en las partes vocales de Alex en 'Sleepwalking'. William Wordsworth es una influencia en mi vida, pero es un poco difícil apreciar la naturaleza cuando hace tanto frío ahí afuera, ja, ja! No sé si estamos influenciados por Radiohead: para mí están totalmente a otro nivel que cualquier otra banda, y es bastante difícil sentirse directamente influído por algo tan intenso. Pero les he escuchado durante innumerables horas, así que supongo que sí que son una influencia.

-¿Qué narices habláis sobre el Manchester City FC. en esa increíble canción llamada 'Make Out Like Japanese School Girls'? (Compré una camiseta del Manchester City cuando estuve allí el año pasado!!!). ¿Os gusta el fútbol? (¿Qué equipos y jugadores?) ¿Lo entendéis? (estuve en Nueva York al verano pasado y no me enteré de la mitad en un partido de béisbol de los NY Mets!! Fue tan aburrido que me largué antes de que acabase el partido). ¿Es cierto que es una canción pornográfica sobre adolescentes asiáticas?

Alex: No sé lo que pienso sobre el fútbol. Amo a bandas como Oasis, Blur, Pulp, y hacer referencia al Man City tiene que ver más con esa parte de la juventud británica de la mitad de los 90 que vestía prendas Adidas que con cualquier equipo de fútbol, ja, ja! Yo era un gran fan de los NY Mets cuando era más joven, pero no sé mucho sobre béisbol ahora mismo. Me gustan los deportes, pero más como pasatiempo que como algo serio. Ja, ja, ja! No sé si es tanto una canción pornográfica como acerca de una relación superficial basada en el hecho de salir con alguien porqué tenéis cosas en común ("Hey I also have some Cathy Park Hong novels", "Whatever's Cool With Me" is so underrated in Dinosaur Jr canon"), y queréis protagonizar actos vulgares y sudorosos envolviendo vuestras lenguas.

Thom: Ja, ja! La letra decía originalmente "y cuando mi equipo de fútbol empieza a perder", pero Alexes tan fan de Oasis que lo cambió al Manchester City, porqué Liam y Noel Gallagher siempre llevan esas camisetas y son fans del Man City. Sí, a mí me gusta el fútbol y lo juego siempre que puedo, así que lo entiendo. Mis equipos preferidos son el Bayern de Munich y el F.C. Zuric. Mi jugador favorito es Phillip Senderos. Esa canción es pornográfica pero contiene una increíble referencia a la película 'Roadhouse', una de nuestras favoritas. Por favor, Leopardos, ID A VER 'ROADHOUSE'!

-¿El título del disco hace referencia a la crisis actual? ¿A cómo los seres humanos pueden despertar de estos paseos de sonámbulo que se están convirtiendo en una pesadilla? ¿Sobre qué soñáis habitualmente? ¿Tenéis sueños húmedos? ¿Con quien?

Alex: 'Sleepwalking into the Future' es una referencia a un artículo llamado 'The Long Emergency', que es una representación que asusta bastante sobre un futuro sin grandes suministros para América. Espero qe la gente no despierte de estos paseos de sonámbulo cuando el petróleo se haya acabado y las centrales nucleares funcionen por toda la costa, pero parece que la elección de Barack Obama es una señal de que nos estamos despertando. Mis sueños varían mucho, no puedo decir sobre qué son. No, nunca he tenido un sueño húmedo.

Thom: Le dejo responder a Alex la primer aparte de la pregunta, porqué él le puso nombre al álbum. Suelo tener sueños extraños en los que pierdo el control. Después de ver 'Waking Life' (traducida en España como 'Despertando A La Vida') quería tener un sueño lúcido, así que leí acerca de métodos para inducir este tipo de sueños. Y lo conseguí durante unas semanas, pero por aquél entonces dejé de tener tiempo para dormir y me olvidé de todo aquello. Normalmente me quedo despierto hasta muy tarde. ¿Todo el mundo tuvo un sueño húmedo conmigo?

-¿Qué os parece Obama? (No puede ser tan perfecto!!! Me temo que puede ser un racista de blancos, y que puede crear un Negro Klux Klan o algo parecido...)

Alex: Ja, ja!! Creo que ya existen asociaciones que son prácticamente un "Black Klux Klan", pero hablando en serio, creo que está muy bien que este tipo fuera elegido por delante de McCain, alguen que era una continuación de la lógica del viejo mundo. Habrá que ver si Obama cumple con el tiempo, pero soy definitivamente optimista. Ahora tenemos a un presidente al que le gusta Wilco, Lil' Wayne y Bad Brains!! Casi estoy en la Casa Blanca!

Thom: Creo que Obama es grande y estoy realmente orgulloso de haber utilizado mi primer voto en unas elecciones tan históricas. Se enfrenta a un montón de problemas, pero creo que al menos nos puede dirigir en el camino correcto, e incluso mejorar el país. Debe sentir un montón de presión insana. También lleva a Wilco y al Boss en su Ipod, así que me gusta!

-Ahora me pongo serio: ¿es verdad que el futuro de Alex & The Horribles no está claro? ¿Por qué? No podéis hacernos esto, malditos bastardos!!! Queremos más discos y grandes canciones!!!! ¿Qué pasa?

Alex: Es un poco inestable, pero definitivamente vamos a seguir haciendo canciones en el futuro. La banda será bastante distinta eventualmente, ya que Derek era una pieza clave en nuestro sonido, pero su salida comportará un cambio muy interesante dentro del grupo

Thom: Bueno, el futuro no estuvo claro durante un tiempo. Yo me sentí muy frustrado por cómo estaba pasando todo. No podíamos tocar, y pensaba "¿qué sentido tiene una banda que no puede tocar?". Pero conseguimos grabar un disco tocando juntos solamente una vez, ja, ja! Así que supongo que funcionó. Derek dejó la banda, lo que me deja preocupado, aunque ya nos dijo hace un tiempo que no podría tocar una vez empezara las clases. Será interesante ver cómo sucede todo ahora, porqué Derek era un miembro clave en la banda. Tendremos que ensayar un montón para que las cosas funcionen sin él. Derek escribió muchas canciones, así que creo que ahora me va a tocar dar un paso adelante y escribir más. Por suerte, he mejorado, y tengo esperanza. Estoy seguro que las cosas cambiarán para bien.

-Explicadme los proyectos paralelos como Alex Goldstein & The Quakers (Todavía no he podido escuchar nada). ¿Tenéis otros proyectos o bandas paralelas?

Alex: Ja, ja!! Los Quakers son una broma total! Como mis intentos con el Auto Tune que cuelgo en el blog. Amo el Auto Tune. No sé si va a salvar el hip-hop, pero hay tíos por ahí como Kanye West, T-Pain, o quién quiera que produjo 'Lollipop' de Lil' Wayne; quería rendir tributo a esos tipos. Ahora mismo tengo otro proyecto electrónico llamado Bardozzz, pero eso es lo único que voy a decir por ahora. Hay un montón de niebla alrededor de Alex & The Horribles ahora mismo.

Thom: Tengo un proyecto con mi amigo Vin, que es un gran guitarrista, y el material que hemos hecho está muy bien. De momento no se lo hemos dejado escuchar a nadie hasta que acabemos el disco, pero cuando lo tengamos os lo enviaremos. He escrito un montón de canciones para esta banda que se supone iba a empezar con mi amigo de la escuela, pero no encontramos nada barato donde tocar en Brooklyn. Así que quizás las probemos con los Horribles cuando llegue el momento. También tengo un programa increíble llamado Logic, y he estado componiendo material electrónico, pero no pienso colgar nada hasta que tenga un disco acabado.

-¿Qué bandas que hayáis escuchado últimamente recomendaríais a los lectores leopardos?

Alex: "Rock Bottom" de Robert Wyatt es un album oceánico muy molón. Si te gusta escuchar música ambient y acuosa, lo recomiendo mucho. El último de Animal Collective, "Merriwheather Post Pavilion" es un discazo pop increíble, y estoy seguro que será una referencia de la música independiente de esta década. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart seguro que también será un bombazo este año. Titus Andronicus son la mejor nueva banda de New Jersey desde The Wrens, y hablando de mi tierra natal... "Born In The USA" de Bruce Springsteen es un disco increíble.

Thom: Blur, Grateful Dead, The Byrds, Can, Beefheart, Yes, Titus Andronicus (id a verles si tocan por allí; son buenísimos!). XTC es mi nueva banda; son increíbles!

-Y para acabar, varias curiosidades: 1) ¿Qué es ese video 'No Homo' que colgásteis en vuestro blog? 2) ¿Quién es ese hombre en la foto del perfil de vuestro Myspace?; 3) Hice el test Quizzer de vuestro Facebook y me sale que si fuera un miembro de Alex & The Horribles sería Ramy. ¿Eso es bueno o es malo?

Alex: 1. "No Homo" es una peli que hizo Ramy. 2. El tipo de la foto es "Tilghman", de Road House, del que hacemos referencia en la canción "Make Out Like..." 3. Ja, ja! 

Thom: 1) Es un video que hizo Ramy; 2) Iggy Pop o Van Morrison. 3) No sé qué implica que seas Ramy, ja, ja!!

Interview: Alex & The Horribles (english version)

IF YOU FOLLOW THIS BLOG, YOU WILL KNOW WE ARE FANS FROM THIS YOUNG BAND FROM RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY. THEY CAPTURE THE ESSENCE OF BEST INDIE BANDS IN THE 90'S (PAVEMENT, PIXIES, DINOSAUR JR...), WITH GREAT SONGS MADE WITH THE OLD SPIRIT OF 'DIY' ADAPTED TO INTERNET AGE. THEIR SECOND ALBUM DESERVED A SECOND LEOPARD'S INTERVIEW WITH THAT GUYS...

-First of all, tell me what have you been doing since we last spoke with you, and the details of the recording of 'Sleepwalking into the future' (details include the musical ones, personal ones, if you went into bed with many girls, if you stole some beers in the grocery shop... anything!!). I like having very different songs in the album (fast ones, furious ones, pop ones, melodic...)

Alex: Hey, Alex Goldstein, vocalist, frontman, whatever, here. Now I am not really sure if this album was supposed to happen. School and other obligations can put a lot of pressure on a band, and certainly did for this one. Over the summer, we were not able to play for the better half of it, due to like... work, vacations, whatever. Come the school year, we made a strong effort to play, meeting up every Friday, writing new songs, re-working old ones, and playing shows at Death by Audio in Brooklyn and Mercury Lounge in Manhattan. But as they say, all good things must come to an end, and school got the best of the band. For about two, maybe three months, we weren't able to practice, and it was in this time I wrote most of the lyrics to the album. If the album exudes some idea of optimism in the face of losing the thing(s) you love, I guess this is the reason why. So come December, our plans to record an album had come to a halt, when Derek, the lead guitarist, mixer, the guy whose house we play at, decided he didn't want to play anymore. After a discussion I had with him, we decided that we should just record the songs we have for the sake of how much we like them. This is why the album is such a ramshackle affair, as "Make Out Like Japanese School Girls" was intended as a single, as was most likely to be the fate of "Dig Up My Soul", and some of the songs on the album aren't played with the full five piece band. Our band is stil trailing on, but this album wasn't meant to happen.

 

Thom: Greetings Leppards! Since we last spoke there have been some traumas and some great moments. I am still in college and it is going well. I've been writing a bunch of songs that I'm not sure what I'm going to do with yet. Possibly they will appear on the next Horribles album?! I'm glad that you like the songs.

 

-Is it true you recorded it in an attic? Where? Why? How about the listening party on a friday after recording?

Alex: Yeah, Derek recorded us in his attic, where we used to play, for mostly the economic purpose of it. We were offered a pretty good budget by a local studio, but due to all this drama that was happening, whatever... we decided to do it ourselves. Basically when we were recording "Mouth Jazz" and "O Jin!" with 2/5 of the band not present, we kinda jerked around because we thought there wasn't going to be a band anymore. We had the listening party minus Ramy driving around in our friend's car on that Friday.

 

Thom: Yes we did record it in an attic. Well we practice in Derek's attic so that is the base of our operations. We recorded both albums up there. I personally wanted to go to a studio to do this album, but I think the album came out sounding great (there are still changes I would make but I love it regardless). We used amps on this one so that helped the bass sound a lot.

-I read in your blog that one of my favourite songs of the record, 'Coming Down', is based on a Tibetian book who discuss about the dangers of hedonism. Do you think hedonism is dangerous? Do we have to change our ways of living? (Maybe I'm too old and used to it to change now...)

Alex: Hedonism is defintiely a dangerous practice, and I wouldn't advise living your life for that purpose. It is great for your soul to have fun sometimes, and to take your life lightly, but living without care and only for pleasure is something that will only help yourself. Live lightly, but consider others.

 

Thom: I was really surprised when I first started reading The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. Alex had recommended it to me and I got an old copy of it from my Dad. Every page of that book is a real eye opener and I really suggest picking it up. As far as hedonism goes I think its terrible that society has fallen into a point where all we seek is pleasure. I don't think all pleasure is destructive but we must really watch ourselves.

-The record is full of references to fucking great bands (Pulp, Blur, The Kinks, Nirvana, Thin Lizzy, Sonic Youth, Radiohead, And You Will Know Us..., Joy Division...) and to many poetry. Are these your main influences? (Not only in music, but in life as well)

Alex: Well, first off, thanks, it is an honor to even be in the same sentence with those bands. As far as the Horribles go, our influences vary from song to song, or even within the song as this album has many cases of. "Mary X" is meant to sound like a combination of Cap'n Jazz, Dinosaur Jr, and The Band and "O Jin" is meant to be a fusion of early Creation Records greats like The Boo Radleys or Teenage Fanclub with a Skynyrd coda. As a songwriter, lyrically, I am influenced by... I don't know.... everything! haha! My lyrics are just references to movies, authors, musicians, poets, etc. that have influenced my life. Associate me with Stephen Malkmus only though. Please.

Thom: Yeah all those bands you mentioned were really big influences on the album. Also like the week before we started recording I got into The Fall and I'm sure people can hear the Mark E. Smith influence on Alex's vocals on "Sleepwalking". William Wordsworth is an influence on my life, but it is kind of hard to really appreciate nature when its so cold outside haha. I don't know if we are influenced by Radiohead; to me they are on a totally other level then everyone else and it's kinda hard to be directly influenced by something so intense but I did listen to countless hours of Radiohead so I guess they are an influence. 

 

-What the hell are you talking about Manchester City FC. in that awesome song called 'Make Out Like Japanese School Girls'? (I bought a Manchester City t-shirt when I went there last year!!!). Do you like soccer? (Which teams and players?) Do you understand it? (I went to New York last summer and did'nt understand nothing at all in a baseball game of NY Mets!!! It was so boring that I left the stadium before the game was over). Is this really a porn song about asian teen women?

Alex: I don't know what I think about soccer. I love Oasis, Blur, Pulp, those kinds of bands, and referencing Man City as a lot more of a reference to the Adidas wearing British New Labour youth of the mid 1990s then to any team. haha. I used to be a pretty big Mets fan when I was younger, but I don't really know much about baseball now. I like sports, but it's really just a pastime to me then anything to be taken seriously. Hahaha, I don't know if this is a "porn song" as much as it is about a shallow relationship just based upon the fact of dating for the purpose of having things in common (ie, "Hey! I also have some Cathy Park Hong novels!",  "Whatever's Cool With Me" is so underrated in Dinosaur Jr canon!")  and wanting to perform lewd sweaty acts involing the tounges.

 

Thom: haha The lyric was originally "and when my football team starts to lose", but Alex being such and Oasis nut changed it to Man City because Liam and Noel Gallagher always wear their Man City kits and are fans of the team. Yeah I like soccer I play every now and then so I understand it. Teams I like are Bayern Munich, FC Zurich. My favorite player is Philippe Senderos. It is a porn song but it contains an awesome reference to the film Roadhouse a favorite of ours. Please Leppards GO WATCH ROADHOUSE! 

 

-Title of the album makes reference to the current crisis? How human people may wake up from this sleepwalking that is becoming a nightmare? What do you usually dream about? Do you have wet dreams? Who with?

Alex: "Sleepwalking into the Future" is a reference to the article "The Long Emergency" which is a pretty frightening depicition of a future without a major power supply for America. I hope that people don't wake up from this "sleepwalking" when oil is depleted and nuclear power stations run up and down the coast, but it seems to me the election of Barack Obama is a sign that we are waking up. My dreams vary so much, I can't say what they are about at all. Nah, I have never had a wet dream.

 

Thom: I'll let Alex answer the first part (he named the album). I usually have very strange dreams when I am not in control. After seeing Waking Life I wanted to be able to lucid dream (wikipedia link?) so I read up on methods to induce a lucid dream and I was good at it for a few weeks but then I just had no time to sleep and forgot about. I usually stay up very late. "Everybody had a wet dream" with myself?

-What dou you think of Obama? (He can't be that perfect!! So I'm afraid he may be a white racist, creating a Black Klux Klan, or something like that...)

 

Alex: Haha, I guess you could say there are associations that are pretty much the same as the "Black Klux Klan", but in all seriousness,  I think it is great that this guy was elected over McCain, someone who really just was a reiteration of old world logic. I guess we will have to see if Barack proves himself with time, but I am definitely optimistic. We have a president that likes Wilco, Lil' Wayne, and Bad Brains! I am practically in the White House.

 

Thom: I think Obama is great and I'm really proud to have used my first vote in such a historic presidential race. He faces a lot of problems but I feel as though he can at least set us on the right track if not improve our country. He must feel an insane amount of pressure. Also he has The Boss and Wilco on his iPod so he's alright in my book!
 

-Now I become serious: is it true that the future of Alex & The Horribles is not clear? Why? You can't do this to us, bloody bastards!!!! We want more records and great songs!!!! What's wrong?

Alex: This is a bit shakey, but we are definitely going to keep making songs in the future. The band is going to be a lot different eventuallly, as Derek was a big contributor to our sound, but his departure will make for a very interesting change within the band's overall presence. 

 

Thom: Well the future was not clear for a while, I myself was very frustrated with the way things were going. We were never really able to play so like 'whats a band that doesn't play?' I thought. But we managed to record an album with only playing together once haha so I guess it worked out. But Derek just the other day left the band, which makes me very upset but he did tell us ahead of time he wouldn't be able to play once school started again. Its gonna be interesting to see how things play out from here, cause Derek was such a key member of the group, we're gonna have to do a lot of practicing to get things right without him. Derek wrote a lot of the songs so now I think I am gonna have to step up and write more but luckily my songwriting has gotten better. I am hopeful though; things will turn out alright I'm sure. Hopefully once Derek is done with school or isn't so busy he will come play in the band again, cause he can shred! You will most certainly be getting more records and more songs Leppards do not fear!

-Tell me about parallel projects like Alex Goldstein & The Quakers (I can't download the songs of your blog here in my office, so I still haven't listened to that). Do you have any other projects or bands?

Alex: Haha, the Quakers are a total joke. As are any of my endeavours into Auto Tune which I post on the blog. I love Auto Tune, I don't know if it is saving hip hop, but there are some guys out there like Kanye West, T-Pain, whoever produced "Lollipop" by Lil' Wayne; and I really just wanted to pay tribute to those dudes. As of now, there is a side project in electronica called "Bardozzz" but that's all I am going to say. There is a lot of fog around our band right now. 

 

Thom: I have a project with my friend Vin who is a really great guitar player and the stuff is really great. We aren't letting anybody hear it till we are finished with a record but when we finish it I'll be sure to send it over to you. I wrote a bunch of songs for this band I was supposed to start with my friend from school but we have nowhere cheap to play in Brooklyn so maybe we'll try them out in Horribles when the time is right. Also I just got Logic which is an awesome program and I have been making a bunch of electronic stuff with it but likewise I'm not gonna post anything till a record is finished.

-Which bands that you are listening lately would you recommend to leppard's readers?

Alex: "Rock Bottom" by Robert Wyatt is a really cool "oceanic" album, I definitely recommend listening to it if you like ambient, "watery" music. As far as "watery" music goes, Animal Collective's latest album "Merriwheather Post Pavilion" is a fucking awesome pop record, and is most likely going to be a landmark for this decade as far as independent, or just flat out inventive music goes. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are going to be a breakout act this year for sure. Titus Andronicus are the best New Jersey band since The Wrens, and speaking of my home state... "Born In The USA" by Bruce Springsteen is an amazing record.

 

Thom: Blur, Grateful Dead, The Byrds, Can, Beefheart, Yes, Titus Andronicus (go see them if they come by you they are great!), and XTC is my new band man they are amazing!

-Some curiosities: 1) What's that 'No Homo' video that you uploaded in your blog?  2) Who's that man in your Myspace profile? (The one of the picture in 'influences')  3) I did the Quizzer test and I'm suposed to be Ramy. Is it good or bad for me?

 

Alex: 1. "No Homo" is a movie Ramy made. 2. The guy in the influences section is "Tilghman" from Road House, who is referenced in "Make Out Like..." 3. Haha. 

 

Thom: Its a video Ramy made! Iggy Pop or Van Morrison. I don't know what its like to be Ramy hahah.

Darren Hayman & The Secondary Modern, 'Pram Town' (2009)

Paseando por el pueblo, a paso lento. Llueve, hace frío y la bruma tapa las sonrisas de los transeúntes. En el paki de la esquina, las portadas de los diarios son para algún sórdido episodio relativo a familias desestructuradas. Y en el pub de la calle mayor, la pizarra anuncia el partido de la Premier que reunirá a la mitad del pueblo alrededor de una cerveza y una pantalla gigante con las que matar un sábado por la tarde en Harlow.

En el pueblo hay amantes, borrachos, aspirantes a estrella pop, y hasta 3 lesbianas que conviven como buenamente pueden en esos enormes edificios horribles, contenedores de tantísimas almas en pena. Te has vuelto a pelear con tu novia de este mes porqué te pilló mirándole las tetas a la camarera pecosa y de piel blanca blanquísima, casi transparente. Dudas si ir a verla e intentar hacer las paces, o llamar a algún compañero del curro con el que compartir unas pintas y una partida de dardos. Sabes perfectamente que escogerás la segunda opción. Cualquier excusa es buena para no pensar demasiado y esquivar tus propios miedos. La cuestión es dejar correr el tiempo hasta que llegue un nuevo lunes, y tu mediocre vida de blue collar dé otra vuelta de tuerca...
